Dr. David Hoch, the recently retired athletic director of Loch Raven High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, has just published his first book, Blueprint for Better Coaching. This book goes beyond the X’s and O’s of coaching and discusses key issues involving communication, working with parents, developing organizational skills and risk management. Coaches must be the leader of the team, and this book provides guidelines for coaches to develop and improve on leadership skills. Each chapter helps coaches to understand the management side of coaching, and provides ideas and guidelines for improvement.
Dr. Hoch retired in 2010 after a 41-year career than included 16 years as a high school athletic director and 24 years as a basketball, soccer and tennis coach, including 14 years as a basketball coach on the college level. Dr. Hoch has authored more than 350 professional articles that have been published in many of the nation’s top publications. Many of his articles have appeared in NFHS and NIAAA publications – High School Today, NFHS Coaches’ Quarterly and Interscholastic Athletic Administration.
This is a great book for all coaches – the coach just starting out as well as the veteran who is always looking to improve. Dr. Hoch’s writing style is easy to follow and understand, and this book is a must for all interscholastic coaches.
