Publisher's Note: The National Federation of State High School Associations is the only source of official high school interpretations. They do not set aside nor modify any rule. They are made and published by the NFHS in response to situations presented.
Robert F. Kanaby, Publisher, NFHS Publications, 2009

SITUATION 1: No spotter is present as a flyer is extended in a (a) triple-base straddle lift; (b) Swedish fall; (c) triple-base T-lift; (d) triple-base dead-man lift; (e) vertical T-lift. RULING: (a), and (c) illegal; (d) and (e) legal. (b) is legal if all three of the bases are facing the top person, otherwise, it requires a spotter. COMMENT: For (a) and (c), a separate spotter is required for extended stunts. Examples (d) and (e) are specifically listed exceptions that do not require a spotter and (b) is specifically listed as an exception if the bases are all facing the top person. (2-4-7)

SITUATION 2: A flyer dismounts while holding (a) poms; (b) a hard sign; (c) a spirit flag on a pole. RULING: (a) legal; (b) and (c) illegal. COMMENT: Holding hard objects while performing cradle dismounts can interfere with the safe execution of the cradle. (2-6-2)

SITUATION 3: A flyer performs a double twist to a cradle on: (a) grass; (b) a cheer performance mat; (c) a gymnasium floor; (d) wet grass. RULING: (a) and (b) legal; (c) and (d) illegal. COMMENT: A twist to a cradle involving more than one rotation is permitted only on appropriate mats, grass, and rubberized and soft-yielding surfaces. (2-6-7)
