Carmel extends national swimming title streak

2013_Carmel_swimming

On February 9, the Carmel (Indiana) High School girls swimming team extended its national record to 27 consecutive state championships at the 2013 Indiana High School Athletic Association state swimming meet held at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. Carmel scored 397 points to easily outdistance runner-up Mishawaka Penn High School, which scored 189 points.

Carmel’s streak is the longest currently active high school state championship streak regardless of sport or gender. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ online multimedia National High School Sports Record Book, it ties the Pickford (Michigan) High School boys track and field program (1952-78) for the second-longest all-time streak in high school sports history. The Honolulu (Hawaii) Punahou High School boys swimming program set the all-time record of 29 straight state championships from 1958 to 1986.
