The NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) has updated its position statements on medical applainces and for sports hygiene. Both statements can be found on the NFHS SMAC Position Statements and Guidelines page and are just two of 16 documents presented by the SMAC. Other topics include position statements on concussions, energy drinks and steroids.
The SMAC is chaired by Dr. William Heinz of Maine, and includes representatives from NFHS member associations, the NFHS Coaches Association, the NFHS Officials Association, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, as well as six at-large members from the medical field.
Founded in 1996, the SMAC provides guidelines to all state associations that reflect the latest medical information in a format that is user-friendly and could be made readily available to all high schools. It also has produced four editions of the NFHS Sports Medicine Handbook, which can be purchased here.
