2006-07 Spirit Points of EmphasisPoints of Emphasis highlight the major rules changes and emphasize other rules for which additional clarification may be needed.Basket Toss Surfaces - The skill of the basket toss and other similar multi-base tosses many times has evolved to incorporate additional skills within the toss. The new rule limiting the surfaces for basket tosses is consistent with the NFHS focus on risk minimization. Coaching Responsibilities - Spirit coaches are responsible for the safety and well being of all participants, including assessing the progressions and performer readiness of his/her team. Additionally, coaches are responsible for appropriate practice and performance conditions which included heat and hydration requirements and knowledge in recognition and care for injuries such as concussions. The coach or other school approved adult representative must be attendance at all spirit activities. Teams must be limited to performing skills that the adult in charge is knowledgeable about and capable of providing safety teaching and supervising. Communication between coaches, school administration and participants is critical and necessary. Performer Readiness - A prudent coach does not allow a participant to perform without adequate skills and preparation, and must not allow his/her team members to perform skills for which they are not adequately trained and proficient. (See progressions, page 74). As with any athletic activity, it is the coach's responsibility to ensure that team members demonstrate proficiency with lower-level skills before progressing to more advanced skills. Special Needs - As trends in spirit activities occur, coaches must be prepared to meet the unique and changing needs of a variety of student participants (diabetics, asthmatics, special needs). Spirit coaches are encouraged to continue their educational background in the emerging areas of spirit and student needs (mainstreaming, injury prevention, seizures, etc.). |
