2006-07 Spirit Rules Interpretations

SITUATION 1: A participant arches her back and drops her head backward while: (a) standing on the performing surface; (b) being carried in a deadman lift; (c) being tossed. RULING: (a), (b) and (c) legal. COMMENT: The rule that prohibited dropping the head backward has been deleted making (b) and (c) legal unless the head drops below the waist. The stunt would then be illegal. (2-8-2)

SITUATION 2: A participant is standing on the performing surface and performs: (a) a handstand that arches over into a sponge with two bases and a separate head and shoulders spotter; (b) a forward suspended roll; (c) a handstand that arches over onto a shoulder sit without a spotter. RULING: (a) legal; (b) and (c) illegal. COMMENT: In (b), forward suspended rolls are not permitted from the performing surface. In (c), the inverted portion of this stunt requires a spotter. (2-8-2)

SITUATION 3: A flyer in an extension prep drops into a half pendulum caught by: (a) two people; (b) three people: (c) four people. RULING: (a) illegal; (b) and (c) legal. COMMENT: A pendulum or pendulum-type stunt must now have at least three stationary catchers who remain in their original positions. (2-8-5)

SITUATION 4: During a routine on a gymnasium floor, a spirit team: (a) performs a helicopter; (b) performs a log roll; (c) loads a flyer into the hands of two bases and the flyer is immediately tossed and cradled by the original bases and a separate head and shoulders spotter/catcher. (elevator toss) RULING: (a) and (b) legal; (c) illegal. COMMENT: A gymnasium floor is considered to be an appropriate surface for helicopters (a) and log rolls (b), but not for tosses that are similar to a basket toss (c). (2-10-2)

SITUATION 5: A basket toss is performed on: (a) wet grass; (b) a gymnasium floor; (c) a wrestling mat; (d) a cheer performance mat; (e) a rubberized surface on an outdoor track. RULING: (a) and (b) illegal; (c), (d) and (e) legal. (2-10-2)

SITUATION 6: A flyer is tossed in a face-up, layout position by four tossers/catchers: (a) rotating 180 degrees in the horizontal plane; (b) rotating 360 degrees in the horizontal plane. RULING: (a) legal; (b) illegal. COMMENT: A legal helicopter may not rotate more than 180 degrees. (2-10-10)

SITUATION 7: A flyer is tossed in a face-up, layout position, rotating 180 degrees in the horizontal plane. There are three tossers, one located at the flyer's shoulders and one on each side of the flyer's torso, who do not move prior to the catch. RULING: illegal. COMMENT: There is no participant in the position of a head-and-shoulders catcher at the end of the stunt. (2-10-10)

SITUATION 8: A flyer performs a braced tick-tock from a single-base extension. RULING: legal. COMMENT: Single-based tick tocks are permitted provided the flyer remains vertical. (2-11-1)

SITUATION 9: A double-based flyer in a liberty with spotter is braced by two flyers in shoulder stands who also have spotters. The flyer is popped to a tucked position on her back, then is popped to: (a) an extension prep; (b) a straddle sit, and is popped again to an extension prep. RULING: Both are legal. COMMENT: Consecutive loss-of-contact transitions are permitted, provided that all conditions of this rule are met during each transition. (2-11-1)
