2008 Volleyball Rule Changes

1-6-2:  Prior to timed warm-ups, a conference shall be conducted with the head coach and captain(s) from each team.

Rationale: This change more accurately reflects what many states already permit by allowing more than one captain to attend the prematch conference as many teams have co-captains.

5:  Replace all references to referee with first referee and replace all references to umpire with second referee.

Rationale: More accurately reflects the current terminology in the sport of volleyball.

5-1-1:  Assistant officials include scorer, libero tracker, timer and line judges.

Rationale: The change of deleting any reference to assistant scorer to only libero tracker (LT) more easily identifies the position and its responsibilities.

5-8-4:  By state high school association adoption, line judges may use flags.

Rationale: The opportunity to use flags continues. This change clarifies the state association shall have the responsibility to determine how the use of flags shall be implemented if they are used.
