Water Polo Rules Changes - 2022-24
2-4-4**:** New language defining hair-control devices and other adornments in the hair that are securely fastened and do not present an increased risk to the player, teammates or opponents are permitted.
Rationale: Clarifies adornments such as beads can be worn in the hair and aligns language with other NFHS rules codes.
2-4-8: For religious reasons, uniforms providing full-body coverage are permitted. The suit must meet the requirements of 2-4 NOTE and 2-4-6. If a competitor’s suit does not meet rule specifications, the referee must notify the state association following the completion of the contest.
Rationale: Eliminates the need for state association to authorize, per individual, in writing the use of suits providing full body coverage.
4-19: New section provides examples describing how the ball can be put into play.Rationale: The addition of this definition will further clarify methods of putting the ball into play.
6-9, 7-21: New language clearly delineates the difference between offensive and defensive impeding, and clarifies the individual penalties associated with each.Rationale: Because offensive and defensive impeding result in separate penalties, these actions require separate definitions in the rules book.
